
Jazmine Sullivan was born in and brought up within Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Pam her mother is an ex-backup artist from Philadelphia International Records. Her father offered her an appointment as curator of the Historic Strawberry Mansion. She together with her family then relocated to the historic mansion. In 2005 she was a graduate of the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts as an alumnus in vocal music. Sullivan performed as the contralto for the choir for children and then sang in the adult choir. Sullivan had limited exposure to secular music. The singer recalls she was just 11 years old when a person was requesting her to sing for solos at church. But, she wasn't yet ready for. "I got lucky enough to be chosen for a McDonald's competitionthat offered children from major cities the opportunity to perform 'Accept what God Allows'. The audience responded very well." She performed alongside Stevie Wonder at his grandson's birthday at the age of 13. Sullivan made her first signing with Jive Records when she was 15. When she was 15 she signed with Jive Records. The label recorded her entire album in Jive Records but it was not made available for release. Sullivan was later dropped from the label. Her work had been in good relationship with Missy Elliott. Elliott produced numerous tracks for her such as "Backstabbers" the track that was produced by Timbaland.
